Fire risk assessment
Legally required for businesses, HMOs and the common parts of flats. It must be recorded in full.
Fire alarm installation
Design, installation and commissioning to BS 5839-1 (commercial) or BS 5839-6 (homes and HMOs).
Fire alarm servicing
BS 5839-1 systems should be serviced at least every six months by a competent firm.

Why certification matters
Anyone can call themselves a fire risk assessor. Third-party schemes such as BAFE SP205 (fire risk assessment) and BAFE SP203-1 (fire alarms) audit a company's competence. Only 78 of the 230 firms we list mention any such certification on their own website, so we show it plainly and link to the register. How we check.
